About LightStep

Lightstep’s reliability platform is the easiest way for developers and SREs to monitor system health, understand changes, respond to incidents, and accelerate release velocity in cloud-native applications.

Job Description

Lightstep enables teams to detect and resolve regressions quickly, regardless of system scale or complexity. We integrate seamlessly into daily workflows, whether you are proactively optimizing performance or investigating a root cause so you can quickly get back to building features. We continue to grow our talented, low-ego, team! We believe that we should always align our actions toward a common purpose, that trust is paramount and must be cultivated, that the most valuable team members multiply rather than add, and that we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously (except when we’re writing way-too-long sentences about our values). We believe that assembling and retaining an inclusive and diverse team is the best way to grow a successful company.

We created Lightstep because we understand the massive architectural transformation underway in the software industry, and we saw an opportunity to accelerate it, all while improving the quality of the developer and end-user experience. While we learned a great deal from our experiences building Dapper (Google’s distributed tracing solution) and Monarch (Google’s high-availability metrics solution), Lightstep is in many ways a reaction to and a generational improvement beyond those approaches. Our story as individuals and as a company revolves around continuous learning, careful listening, and the belief that these fundamentally new software architectures require fundamentally new solutions.

As a Frontend Software Engineer in Product Engineering, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping new product offerings and building new visualizations and features that let our customers turn their system data into real insight and understanding, while working closely with product managers, product designers, backend engineers, and our platform engineering teams. We're looking for someone excited to join a growing team that writes efficient, maintainable code for a standout product used every day by engineers at Lyft, Twilio, and more.

We care deeply about building long term careers and offer opportunities for Software Engineers to grow towards project leadership, engineering management, or other roles in our developing business. In addition, we highly encourage (and have frequently supported) our engineers who give talks at conferences, organize local events, and mentor developing engineers.

You’d be a great addition if…

  • You’re excited about making product changes that immediately impact the users' experience
  • You have 5+ years of experience building single-page web applications with a team of engineers
  • You have led projects or milestones where multiple engineers were tasked with delivering substantial web application features
  • You’re excited to build products for software developers
  • You love working closely and collaborating with product managers, designers, and other software engineers
  • You value inclusion & diversity in the software industry; You’re committed to building a better company in addition to a better product
  • You have a ton of user empathy and want to build the best thing you can for Lightstep’s customers; You love exploring new data visualizations and interactions and thrive on user feedback
  • You like leaving a codebase better than you found it, but you know how to trade off development time and product velocity
  • You’re passionate about personal growth and value receiving feedback from your colleagues; You’re also generous and helpful in giving feedback to your colleagues

Bonus points if…

  • You have experience with or a keen interest in data-intensive applications and distributed systems
  • You have experience in data visualization either professionally or via personal projects - both are great!
  • You have experience with or want to learn React (We are all about excitement around learning and working with new technologies)

Technology we use...

If you’re curious, here are some cool technologies we use to do our work (*please note that these are not all required must-haves*):

  • Frontend: React, Material UI, D3 & Cypress
  • Backend: Go & GRPC, Kubernetes & Helm
